Penetration Grades: Putting Safety, Health, and the Environment in the Driver’s Seat

In today’s rapidly advancing world, road construction isn’t just about Penetration Grades strength and durability it’s about responsibility. The use of penetration grade bitumen plays a crucial role in developing safe, sustainable, and long-lasting roads while upholding the values of safety, health, and environmental care.By choosing the Jegah penetration grade Africa climate and condition, engineers can design pavements that not only perform well but also protect the Penetration Grades users in African environment.

What Is Penetration Grade?

Penetration grade bitumen is a type of bituminous material used mainly in road construction and asphalt paving, classified according to its hardness or consistency. The grading is determined through a standard penetration test, in which a needle penetrates vertically into a bitumen sample at a temperature of 25°C under a 100-gram load for five seconds. The depth of penetration, measured in tenths of a millimeter, indicates how soft or hard the bitumen.

JEGAH LTD supplies premium-quality Penetration grade 40/50, 60/70, 80/100, ensuring the consistent performance and reliability for a wide range of industrial and construction applications across Africa.

Bitumen 60/70:

Penetration bitumen grade 60/70 is a moderate type of bitumen in terms of hardness, meaning it is not whether too hard nor too soft. Therefore, this grade of penetration bitumen resists temperature changes from -22 to +76. Accordingly, it is a perfect choice for road engineers in various regions in Africa.

In addition to the quality, bitumen pen grade 60/70 is the most basic form of bitumen, coming out of a vacuum distillation column; therefore, it requires no further processing. That’s why bitumen 60/70 is the basis of pricing of other types of bitumen.

Properties of Penetration Grade Bitumen 60/70:

Each grade of bitumen has various properties, depending on the source (crude oil) and processing method. Therefore, all bitumen producers and suppliers are in charge of testing bitumen after production and providing buyers with specifications table. Bitumen 60/70 is not an exception. When this grade of bitumen is produced, the refiners send a sample of it to a laboratory, where various tests including penetration, viscosity, flash point, softening point, ductility and specific gravity are implemented on the sample.

The result of all these tests is essential in evaluating the quality of bitumen 60/70, however, the penetration level and softening point are more important. Penetration of bitumen 60/70 is between 60 to 70 mm, while the softening point is 46° C.

What are the Applications of Penetration Bitumen 60/70:

The main application of bitumen grade 60/70 is in road construction. For paving roads in various regions, they blend bitumen 60/70 with aggregates to form hot mix asphalt. This grade of bitumen is suitable for roads with heavy traffic load. Bitumen 60/70 is popular in African countries, mainly because it is a cost-effective solution that reduces the expenses, without affecting the quality.

Bitumen 60/70 is also used to produce polymer modified bitumen. Road engineers blend bitumen 60/70 with certain types of polymers to enhance the performance of bitumen in terms of elasticity, ductility, and the softening point.

A Smooth Shift Toward Sustainability :

Modern road construction isn’t just about performance it’s about protecting the planet. Jegah Penetration grade bitumen supports sustainable practices through recyclability, long service life, and reduced maintenance needs. Fewer repairs mean lower carbon emissions and less waste, contributing to a cleaner and greener environment. By using the Jegah Penetration grade, engineers are not only improving road longevity but also taking a conscious step toward sustainability.

Get Shifting With Penetration Grades

Driving the Future of Road Performance

When it comes to building strong, durable, and adaptable roads, Jegah Penetration Grade Bitumen leads the way. It’s the engine behind smooth, safe, and resilient pavements that keep nations moving. By understanding and applying the Jegah penetration grade, engineers can “get shifting” toward better road performance, longer service life, and safer travel for everyone.
